Patients are being urged to get organised ahead of the two bank holidays in May, be aware of service availability and request repeat prescriptions in advance.
GP and pharmacy services will only be limited on Monday 7th May and Monday 28th May. The GP extended working hours project allows for additional GP appointments to be made into the evenings until 8pm, and on weekends and bank holidays from 8am until 6pm. Patients are advised of the available appointments by contacting their own surgery, these appointments are available at three locations and may not be with your usual doctor.
Pharmacists will be open as normal on the weekend prior both bank holidays and certain pharmacies will be open on the Monday. Your local pharmacy is the place to go to get any prescription medicines and clinical advice for minor health concerns. As well as helping with common illnesses – like sore throats, coughs, colds, tummy troubles and aches and pains – and provide advice on over-the-counter medicines.
Most local pharmacies have consultation rooms for private conversations. Your pharmacist can also talk to you confidentially without anything being noted in your medical records, which some people may prefer. Getting advice from a local pharmacist is the best first step for a minor health concern. Patients are advised to telephone their usual pharmacy before travelling as opening hours may vary. For further information on opening times please see the information below.

Dr. Jeff Schryer, Chair of NHS Bury Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and local GP said: “Whilst self care is generally the best option for minor ailments, it is important that local people know where to go or who to contact if they are unwell, so that they can receive the best possible treatment in the quickest time for their condition.”
Where to go for the right medical care:
NHS Choices website (http://www.nhs.uk/) for advice on less urgent health needs.
NHS 111 for clinical advice, assessment and for direction to the most appropriate services for treatment if you need medical help fast but it is not an emergency – available 24/7.
GP practices will be closed on the following bank holidays: 7th May (early May bank holiday) and 28th May (spring bank holiday). Patients can ask their GP surgery about appointments in the evening, weekends and bank holidays. These are available from 6.30pm – 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am – 6pm at weekends and bank holidays at ‘three hub’ practices across the borough.
