People aged five and over in the UK with coronavirus symptoms can now be tested for the virus.

Anyone with a new continuous cough, a high temperature or a loss or change in their sense of taste or smell, can book a test.  A drive-through testing site is now available in Bury.

In addition to all essential workers experiencing symptoms, now anyone with COVID-19 symptoms aged five and over can access a test.  This will be reassuring to many families and will help people who cannot work from home to get back to work.

The symptoms of coronavirus include a high temperature, this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back; a new, continuous cough,  if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than normal, and a loss of or change to your sense of smell or taste.

The coronavirus test involves taking a quick throat and nose swab.  The swab is then sent to a laboratory to look for signs of the virus.

Testing is most effective within the first 5 days of symptoms developing, ideally the first 3 days, so it’s important to get an early test. Results are available in under 72 hours.

Testing is key to getting people back to work as soon as possible and it is now available in Bury at a convenient and accessible drive-through testing site.  Those eligible to receive a test can request one by providing some brief information via a secure online booking system, which can be accessed here:

Alternatively people can register for testing at a regional site here: and for anyone that can’t reach a testing site by a personal vehicle, a self-test kit can be ordered via the national portal.

Lesley Jones, Bury’s Director of Public Health said:

“Testing for coronavirus is important in both diagnosing people, to understand how far the virus has spread locally and to help prevent further spread.

“Testing is now available to anybody aged five or over that are experiencing symptoms.  This will be reassuring for many families, and gives those wanting to get back to work important information as to whether they need to continue to self-isolate, or reassurance about when they are safe to go back to work.

“Requesting a test is easy via our online booking system, testing is most effective in the first five days and so it’s important to request a test as soon as you can after you or your child first experience symptoms.”
